Our New Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel is Here
By Gregory Gorea
Seneca Wine & Liquor of New Hartford NY

Our new Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel is here, and all we can say is wow!  This barrel was HAND SELECTED BY US.  You won’t get this exact bourbon anywhere else in the country, and since we bought the whole barrel, we are passing the savings onto you!  Now only $25.99 a bottle (While Supplies Last). The signature Bourbon bearing the name of Rev. Elijah Craig, a Bourbon pioneer who is credited with being the first distiller to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels. This is barrel serial #5256736 and was put into the barrel on March 19, 2008, and aged on the 6th floor of warehouse U at Elijah Craig.  This bourbon is almost 12 years old!  The barrel yielded was 120 bottles (10 cases).

Long before the term Small Batch even existed, the Master Distillers at Elijah Craig were hand-selecting just the right number of barrels to make Elijah Craig. This expertise and attention to detail give Elijah Craig Small Batch the right balance of rich flavor and full body. Each small batch carries a signature warm spice and subtle smoke flavor. A combination that belongs in any Bourbon fan’s regular rotation.

Smooth and warm; pleasantly woody with accents of spice, smoke, and nutmeg

94 proof

Burnished copper

Delightfully complex with notes of vanilla bean, sweet fruit, and fresh mint

Long, sweet, and slightly toasty

Wine store in Utica- It’s Party Time: How Much Wine, Liquor and other drinks do I Need?

Wine store in Utica- It’s Party Time: How Much Wine, Liquor and other drinks do I Need?

When customers come into the store, they never know how much to buy for their party.  Whether it be a graduation, anniversary, birthday or holiday, no one wants to run out of wine, liquor, beer, soda or water.

Let’s start with the facts, not everyone drinks everything you are going to serve.  A certain percentage of your guests will not drink.  The rule usually is about 15% do not drink wine, liquor or beer (they either aren’t old enough, quit drinking, or never drank).  If you are planning a party of 120 you can guess that about 20 of those guests (15%) will drink only soda or water.  Now let’s plan for the other 100.  Out of the 100 guest that will drink, 45% will prefer wine, 30% will drink beer and the remaining 25% will drink a mixed liquor drink.

What do you need to fill your bar for 100 guests?  The first thing I tell customers is start with a signature drink.  A few gallons of a signature cocktail will go far, and many guests that want one drink, will reach for your signature drink.  Make it fun by naming your signature drink after the event, and even more guests will drink your specialty of the party.  Here’s what you’ll need for the rest of the party for 100 guests:

4 Liters of Vodka (By far the most popular at a party)

            2 Liters of Gin

            1 Liter of Light Rum

            1 Liter of Spiced Rum

            1 Liter of Tequila

            1 Liter of Whiskey

            1 Liter of Bourbon

            Vermouth (Martinis)

            Triple Sec (Cosmos)

Tonic, Club soda, Cranberry Juice, Orange Juice, Grapefruit Juice, Ginger Ale, Lime juice.
Soda: Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite or Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist.

Beer: Between 6 and 8 cases of Beer for 100

Wine Storage Tips:  You can’t help coming to a liquor store during extreme temperatures, and the first thing we remind customers when we are bringing their products to their vehicle, don’t leave these in the extreme heat or cold!  During extreme cold or heat make the liquor store your last stop, this way you can bring your purchases right home and store them properly.  Let your purchase ride with you inside the vehicle if you can, this way you won’t forget it in the trunk.

When you get home, I keep my wine in my cellar.  Not my wine cellar, just my normal cellar.  It’s dark and it’s always cool and out of the light.  I have about three old wine racks that I put my red wines on.  My whites I place in my refrigerator in the cellar.  This was they are always cold and ready to drink!

We keep our store cool winter and summer to protect your purchase, in just several minutes in a hot or cold vehicle you can ruin your wine.  You can also ruin your wine at home by putting it in direct sunlight, in a hot or freezing cold garage, on a sun porch, you name it, if the area isn’t cool and dry, you have a great chance of destroying those precious grapes that have been fermenting for you for that special occasion, or just to pop open and enjoy!

1.      Don’t leave wine or champagne in a cold or hot car for any period of time

2.      Store correctly inside and store your bottles sideways

3.      Keep way from sunlight

4.      Store in cool, dark area (I put them in my cellar)

5.      If you re-cork properly, your wine will stay good for 3-5 days

6.      Enjoy!

Napa Valley in Northern California is the wine capital of the United States.  I learned a lot during my trip to Napa to visit some of our suppliers in person.  What a trip!  Napa has beautiful weather as you can see by the picture I took above of the iconic “Welcome to Napa” sign.  We traveled to Napa from San Francisco and the road trip is breathtaking.  The first thing you realize is that Northern California has hundreds of thousands of of undeveloped acres for as far as the eye can see even before you come to the valleys where the grapes are grown and wines are made.

Recently, I did my 23 and me profile.  I never really cared where I came from, but received 23 and me as a gift and I sent it in.  I thought I was 25% Irish, and the rest Italian.  Fact is I am mostly Italian, and slightly Irish.  Knowing this I was impressed with almost every winery telling us that without Italian immigrants, Napa Valley wouldn’t be as famous as it is today for the wine they produce.  The Italians came over and taught the Napa natives how to make wine like the “old country”.  When you think about it, Napa Valley is dominated by Italians.  Think the Gallos, Mondavis and Trinchero families.  These four sets of Italian families (Mondavi’s have separated to form or own Charles Krug, and Robert Mondavi) dominate wine production and brands that we drink and enjoy today.

The Gallo Family makes Apothic, Barefoot, Carlo Rossi, Ecco Domani, Lamarca to name just a few; Robert Mondavi is famous for Woodbridge (which was recently sold to Gallo);  Trinchero is not a name you may know, but you know their wines like Sutter Home, Menage a Trois, Folie a Deux, Joel Gott and Napa Cellars; and Charles Krug is famous for their upscale Napa wines, but you probably don’t know they produce over one million cases of C.K. Mondavi wines by Charles Krug (that’s what the CK stands for!), and they are the house wine for Georgio’s Village Cafe in New Hartford.

If you ever get a chance to go to Napa Valley, go.  It’s a trip I will never forget and neither we you.
